This morning I went to one of the roughest funerals I've ever attended. My adopted brothers' godparents' daughter passed away last Saturday from a sudden heart attack. It was a shock to all who knew her, since she had no prior health problems. She left behind an eight year old daughter and (I believe) four year old son. I went with the rest of my family in support of her family; I never met her, but I know her parents somewhat.
I knew it would be unlike other funerals I've been to, since all others were for those who lived long and full lives. But I wasn't prepared for what the actual experience. Her daughter completely fell apart during the processional of the casket, bawling repeatedly "Mommy!" and "I can't do this!" as her father, who was also in complete tears, helped her out. Those who spoke during the service broke down momentarily as well, and during the recessional the entire family looked to be a wreck, especially her parents.
Seeing all that was extremely difficult and extremely moving. I'm still a good bit unsettled by it.
