news from the uber science-geek corner:
<a href="http://www.livescience.com/php/video/player.php?video_id=Elephant_XMarks" target="_blank">here is an elephant</a> who is trying to figure out why the hell a big X is marked on the side of his head. it is in a place wherein he can only see it with the help of a mirror.

this is a famous test in psychology we do to animals to determine if they recognize themselves in the mirror. until three years ago, only the great apes passed the test (and only marginally so at that). then they tested dolphins, who passed with flying colours. and now another animal goes onto the list, beloved pachyderms recogize themselves in mirrors--implying they have a sense of self and thus also possess the capacity to formulate a theory of mind in others (humans learn to do that around 3 months of age).
the philosophical implications of these discoveries are tremendous and fundamental.

i guess the earth is actually....like...uhh...round.........like really round after all.

Ooh alright, on a slightly serious note: (Ruby's link had me laughing the most!)

I searched for a long time for the name of the song to a car commercial (Saturn's Aura), came across the only link that showed it (Tahiti 80's 'Antonelli', that I actually recognized the band made it worth the effort searching!) Anyway,

Over here at least, the music on adverts is so much more interesting than say, the adverts for new music.

<a href="http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator" target="_blank">live music archive</a> there's a lot of jam band fodder on here but the gems are worth the search.

<a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=tYnn51C3X_w" target="_blank">Shoes, oh my G-d, shoes!</a>

Funniest stuff on the internet!!! I literally ran home to make Pretty Grave Maker watch it :)
A note upon his desk
"P.S. Bring Me Home And Have Me!"
Leather elbows on a tweed coat
-Oh!-
Is THAT the best you can do ?
So came his reply :
"But on the desk is where I want you!"
