Smiths tribute bands listed + concert agenda

All about The Smiths' music, gigs, stories, anything.

Postby Cracked Pleasures » Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:30 pm

As there are quite a good number of tribute bands out there who perform regularly, it may be interesting to list them to have an overview. So if you know a Smiths tribute band, mention them here so that we can create a little list.
Also, if one of the tribute bands performs soon, list it!

These are the two tribute bands in my area:

IRELAND: These Charming Men --- http://www.thesecharmingmen.com and http://www.myspace.com/thesecharmingmen

UK: The Smyths --- http://www.thesmyths.net

concerts: These Charming Men play in Temple Bar Music Centre (Dublin, IE) on 23rd September

Does anybody think it'd be a good idea to have a stangeways forum meet sometime to go to one of these tributes? I know the smyths are currently on tour and very good! There is also a smiths/morrissey tribute night I'd love to attend in september.

Sounds like a rather cool idea. Anything in London I can get to dead easily and cheaply, so that'd be cool if anyone wants to meet up there.

the nice thing about them is that you can request songs in advance via Ask@TheSmyths.net , that's something all tribute bands should do now and then: letting the audience decide what they want to hear.

I have been to one of the Quarry Nights, would have been great if only the guy I was with been a bit less self-conscious - I had to dance (I use the term "dance" loosely) by myself for most of the night. Well apart from the hundreds of gladioli-waving Moz-alikes on the dancefloor of course.

As for the Smyths gigs - go if you get the chance! They're brilliant. They are playing this Thursday in Putney, hope some of you can make it.

Two new dates by These Charming Men, the main Irish tribute of the Smiths (and one that Rourke and Morrissey both congratulated for how well they bring the Smiths atmosphere to life)

These Charming Men Play

Temple Bar Music Center Dublin

Sat, September 23rd

Doors 8pm

The Balmoral Hotel

Warrenpoint,Co.Down (N.Ireland)

Sat, October 14th

Doors 8pm

I'm definitely going to the Temple Bar one next week, and probably to the one in Co.Down as well. Down is closer to my home, but it will be a rush from the airport as I'm just coming back from holiday that day.

Next week in Dublin folks: it's well worth the trip, they're really good!

In the San Francisco Bay Area there is "This Charming Band"
A note upon his desk
"P.S. Bring Me Home And Have Me!"
Leather elbows on a tweed coat
-Oh!-
Is THAT the best you can do ?
So came his reply :
"But on the desk is where I want you!"

Sweet and Tender Hooligans

People on here have most likely heard of them, locals to the So. Cal area. I saw them about 2 years ago as part of Andy and Mike's DJ tour. They were good! But I think any decent Smiths tribute band is reason enough to check them out. It's all about bringing fans together and having a fun night at a club. I guess I say this having read some not -so-pleasant comments regarding tribute bands, namely this one.
I just read somewhere in the last day or so that SATH were somewhere in the UK.

I will check their sites for you... I will let you know. Maybe one of our Mancunians can know it faster, but I will check the sites of the tribute bands that I know.

I am fairly curious about these tribute nights... are they actually any good (compared with a "real band"?).

My scepticism arises from being at parties/events with some awful Beatles tribute bands! :P

If they are recommended, when is the next good one in London? Thanks. :)

I've only seen These Charming Men but would say they're very good imitators. Nothing beats the real Smiths, but a good tribute band will still create the same atmosphere and will be pleasant to hear because all songs sound so familiar. So a good tribute band may not beat a Morrissey concert, but it's still a very pleasant night out.

Went to These Charming Men again yesterday, in my own Belfast (for the wildest crowd I've ever seen on a tribute band gig, including crowdsurfing and people getting on stage!), next gig is 30/12/06 in Dublin!

Met a woman at the gig who is about to do her 41st Morrissey concert of this year next week  How does one pay 41 concerts all over Europe within the 12 months?!
