There Is A Light vs. How Soon Is Now

All about The Smiths' music, gigs, stories, anything.

Postby elko » Sat May 15, 2004 8:31 pm

Generally these two are considered the Smiths two best songs.

How Soon Is Now: Rock epic, ground breaking, great lyrics, incredible sound

There Is A Light...: Pop classic, beautiful melody, exceptional lyrics, wonderfully delicate

I think which of these you prefer says a lot about your general musical preference. HSIN is very much a rock song, where as TIALTNGO is a pop masterpiece beautifully crafted.
I prefer the latter. You?

Definitely "There Is A Light..." To me that is the epitomy of Smiths music. Morrissey's brooding, depressing, sarcastic, darkly comic lyrics, Johnny's produced music....flawless. One of my favorite Smiths tracks.

I concur, "There Is A Light..." wins every time. "How Soon Is Now" grows tiresome after the 674th listen.

You know I never really got deeply into either of these. "How Soon is Now" got off on the wrong foot for me musically because it came in the middle of side 1 of "Hatful of Hollow" and interrupted that great early Smiths sound that remains my favourite. Besides the lyrics are whiny except for the great, "Well when you say it's going to happen now / Well when exactly do you mean?" "There is a Light," in contrast, has (really) dark humour to save it from being maudlin, but the tune always strikes me as oddly (please don't kill me!) muzak-like. However, it's an intriguing combination, hence I have to go with "There is a Light."

Hahahahahahahah

Well, one thing we agree on is that The Smiths wrote some of the most perfect pop songs ever. For me, tho, THE perfect one is "This Charming Man."

I agree. To me, "This Charming Man" has always sounded like a pure pop song. So did "Stop Me..." Everytime I listen to those two songs they just sound like hit singles to me.

In a sane world, "This Charming Man" would have had 10 weeks at No. 1 in both the US and UK charts.

You all know that Johnny Marr said he wanted to be Phil Spector on the guitar? Beautiful man, Johnny Marr!

Most of the Smiths singles sound like sure fire hits:
This Charming Man, Girlfriend In A Coma, Bigmouth, Stop Me, Sheila Take A Bow etc
All the singles are excellent.

Ooooh, CC 'comes to the dark side'! I wonder how may new Smiths listeners are out there? I think it's fascinating that people are still discovering them! Curious too, how they come to listen to the Smiths.
