Here are a few of my faves

No, I've never had a job
Because I've never wanted one

I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly

Oh, so I drank one
It became four
And when I fell on the floor ...
...I drank more
Oh, I can't help quoting you
Because everything that you said rings true

I absolutely love all the lyrics cited above too. Also these verses:
All men have secrets and here is mine
So let it be known
For we have been through hell and high tide
I think I can rely on you ...
And yet you start to recoil
Heavy words are so lightly thrown
But still I'd leap in front of a flying bullet for you
...........

Frankly, Mr. Shankly, since you ask
You are a flatulent pain in the arse
I do not mean to be so rude
Still, I must speak frankly, Mr. Shankly
Image
Color me red when I'm feeling blue.

Everyone's familiar with the website 'Random Smiths lyrics generator'? It might be around one of these threads, I'll have to look. I think there's an option on that site where you can guess the song first before it gives it to you.

Jeane, the low-life has lost its appeal
And I'm tired of walking these streets
To a room with a cupboard bare

What a great opener, only Moz could embrace that lifestyle with such high regard!

Is it me or is Mike out of time (slightly faster) in each of the drum rolls? I always thought that added appeal to the song.

I was looking for a job and then I found a job
and heaven knows I'm miserable now

I'm sure we've all felt like that at some point

Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools
Spineless swines, cemented minds

Great lines to open the album; can't decide which I prefer - that or the spineless bastards all variation.

I left the South
I travelled North
I got confused, I killed a horse
I can't help the way I feel

So unexpected - as is the sacrilegious murder that follows.

And finally:

A heartless hand on my shoulder
A push and it's over
Alabaster crashes down
Six months is a long time
I tried living in the real world
Instead of a shell but before I began
I was bored before I even began
I love those lyrics but I'm not entirely sure why - they just work somehow. Not sure what the alabaster's doing there though...

wow well I don't need to come back and add more these are some of my faves too...stop me line is funny i also like "who said I lied because I never, I never..." cos Morrissey sounds like a child that blatantly has been telling porkies - hilarious!!

i wonder what he thought would make him smile before he died...??? such mystery and curious cunning in that line and the sadness of i've seen this happen....i die and go to heaven while listening to that song...beautiful perfect music and intricate multi layered moving intelligent lyrics

So many, to many, of course...

Most current listen...

"When will you accept your life? The one you hate..."

"Plans can fall through, so often they do..."

Yes, quite often they do, most often they do...

I know it's a tad cliché to quote TCM, but it just turned on so you'll have to cope...

"Will nature make a man of me yet?"

"Why pamper life's complexity, when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat..."

"I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear..."

And now then, Rusholme... I am aware I'm just writing for myself now, by the way... Image

"Skirt ascends for a watching eye, it's a hideous trait on her mother's side..."

"But my faith in love is still divine.................." Image

aw thanks! Image hey i love that line too!

gee i dunno what would make him smile Image probably something really random... like seeing a monkey on a tricycle? Image

it's morrissey. i don't think anything would make him smile before he died. he'd just go oh heaven help me i'm dying, (or something extremely poetic) and then he'd die! and we'll all be sad... Image

SO this isn't a SMITHS lyric per se, but it is a Morrissey quote and I feel very relevant- and it gets a sweet story!
So I have a very hard working TA (student teacher basically) and she helped me out a whole lot this quarter, and I have a whole bunch of dried roses in my room (A Morrissey fan with flowers, never!). I also had a roll of neon pink duct tape, so I made a little nametag dealie out of it arond the stem and (keeping in mind that I am a theatre major and most of us can sing and dance etc.) wrote her a going away lyric (she is moving to Japan to teach)- "Now is your time to shine and have the pleasure of saying what you mean and meaning what you sing.- <3 Caity Mae <3"
I gave her her rose and she got SO happy (turns out that there are a few Morrissey fans out there...go figure) It was so sweet!
A note upon his desk
"P.S. Bring Me Home And Have Me!"
Leather elbows on a tweed coat
-Oh!-
Is THAT the best you can do ?
So came his reply :
"But on the desk is where I want you!"

A few of my favourites....
"Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head"
Both funny and sinister, excellent lyrics.
"I know its over, and it never really began, but in my heart it was so real"
For personal reasons... Image
"So if theres something you'd like to try, if theres something you'd like to try, ask me I won't say no, how could I?"
Makes me smile every time
"Cause there are brighter sides to life, and I should know because I've seen them, but not often"
Morrissey actually seems to be singing to someone more miserable than him!
"It took a tatty young boy from birmingham to really really open her eyes"
This line always floors me, not sure why.
"I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice"
Appeals to the hopeless romantic in me
"Two lumps please, you're the bees knees but so am I"
It doesn't fit with the rest of the song at all, but it just seems to work
"How can someone so young sing words so sad?"
Good question
and finally
"And if a double decker bus, crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"
There is a light is such an original take on a love song, how many "I love you" songs deal with death? Possibly the ultimate romantic statement as well.
I agree with all the others that have been said too.

...oh, yes, I love these lines too - they brilliantly capture my own typical state of mind.
....
But you know where you came from, you know where
You're going and you know where you belong
You said I was ill, and you were not wrong
But I can't believe you'd ever care
And this is why you will never care
These things take time
I know that I'm
The most inept
That ever stepped

Oh, the alcoholic afternoons
When we sat in your room
They meant more to me
Than any, than any living thing on earth

These days these are my fave lyrics - ringing in my head all the time! 'cause suddenly I am in a situation so similar to the one in the song, almost unbelieveably so! And I want the one I can't have! Image
