list of early gigs

All about The Smiths' music, gigs, stories, anything.

I went to see a band in manchester, at a club i belive was named 'Jilly's 2' on Oxford Road (i think this was what it was called) It was a scummy little night club that had bands on in the week. I belive The Smiths were supporting someone like, Richard Hell & the voidoids or The Meteors. It was very early in The Smiths carreer and they had not broken through yet. I remember asking someone "who the **** are The Smiths" and getting an unknowing shrug in reply. Moz had the Gladioli in the back pocket if my memory isent playing tricks on me.
Anyone know where i can find the date of the gig and who they were supporting ?

I cant see the club named Jilly's or Jillys 2 on that list. But my creaking memory is now telling me that was the name of the club right next door to the one we went to. I see that on 1983 Feb 21 - Manchester, Rafters, they were supporting richard hell and the voidoids. Phew! my memory came through, after all these years. It seems i was priveleged to see a very early gig. Thanks for the help.

PS. i never thought much about them till a few months later when i heard them on john Peel. It was only because of the strange name and the gladioli that my memory was tweaked when they came on the radio. Although i do remember standing and watching them, i cant recal much about it, except at the end one of my nasty gang of mates (we came in a mob from chester) taking the microphone off Moz and singing about hunting rabbits with dogs, which on hindsight may have been a deciding factor in Moz's vehement anti bloodpsorts ?! :)
I vaguely recal Marr accompanying him with a grin.

Rafters would be the club that was, ironically, in a basement?

Yes, as you say it WAS in the basement. I think that Jillys and Rafters were the same nightclub (different nights ?). I do recal two names over the door, mayhap this is where my confusion lay. They both were at 65 oxford rd manchester. The club is still there and this is its webpage http://www.music-dash.co.uk/venues/jillys/

Im just glad to find out my memories were not embroidered with age, as it all seems to be faling into place now.

hi Zardoz welcome to the forum, & lucky you on catching the Smiths at Rafters in '83, as you rightly pointed out Rafters was in the basement but it wasn't Jilly's upstairs at the time it was called Fagins, it eventually became Jillys & Rockworld (downstairs) as musical preferences changed, my younger sister who was into all that rock thing at the time was a regular, bless her!

love
