John Peel has died

Craig Gannon, Ivor Perry, Stephen Street, John Porter, Troy Tate, what are they up to?

taken from,

Such a little thing writes:

Legendary Radio 1 DJ, John Peel, has suffered a heart attack whilst on a working holiday in Peru, and died this morning.

Of course, Mr Peel, worked with The Smiths and promoted the band through his sessions on Radio 1 (Hatful of Hollow), and became a legend in his own right. Everyone who is involved with pop/rock music will be extremely sad to hear this news.

The breaking news article can be found here:

A biography page for John Peel can be found here (picture of Moz on the right):

May the mighty Peel rest in peace.

Very sad, not to mention unexpected. He was a champion for indie bands, and thrust so mamy great bands into the public eye.

Shocked to read the news on M-solo. Another quote from the BBC News:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Three years after the first Pulp session, Peel said he fell in love with The Smiths because he could not work out what their influences were - something he always looked for in a band.

He championed their first single, Hand in Glove, in 1983, when they too recorded their first Peel Session - but the song failed to reach the chart.

More than 20 years later, The Smiths are regarded as a seminal British band. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Hope someone else there continues to champion his cause for new bands the way he did.

Oh, I saw that in the papers today, I can't believe it!! I actually thought it was some sort of joke at first, or that I'd read it wrongly. <!--emo&:(-->Image<!--endemo--> It's such a huge well as The Smiths, he 'discovered' Joy Division, another amazing band.

I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving
England is mine, it owes me a living
But ask me why and I'll spit in your eye
Oh, ask me why and I'll spit in your eye
But we cannot cling to the old dreams anymore
No, we cannot cling to those dreams
Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body?
I dunno...
Under the iron bridge we kissed
And although I ended up with sore lips
It just wasn't like the old days anymore
No, it wasn't like those days
Am I still ill...?

A note upon his desk
"P.S. Bring Me Home And Have Me!"
Leather elbows on a tweed coat
Is THAT the best you can do ?
So came his reply :
"But on the desk is where I want you!"

The fact that John Peel played the first Ultraviolence 12" on his radio show has made him go up in my estimation. RIP.
