I speak German basically because, well, I learnt. I am a language fanatic, so I studied something in that direction. Being from Belgium originally helped of course, as Dutch and German are very related. After school and after emigrating to Ireland, I further developed my German because of my German colleagues and because of a few trips to German.
BERLIN ICH LIEB' DICH!! What a wonderful wonderful city!
I adore Germany, really. I am goth, that has something to do with it of course, apart from Bauhaus all good gothic bands are German: Blutengel, Lacrimosa, Silke Bischoff/18 Summers, Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows, ...
Other than that, Germans are usually very open-minded and friendly. I always like returning to Germany, in such a way that I even developped sympathies for the Fussball Mannschaft (which is quite rare for a Belgian to like the German soccer team, but I do -- apart from Oliver Kahn, he seems so violent...)
